Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music (FFOTM) members wanted to provide opportunities for the youth of our community to learn to play a musical instrument to enrich their lives, and allow local musicians and FFOTM members to share their passion for music, passing on their joy of traditional music to a new generation.
Due to a generous grant from Bookmans Entertainment Exchange, we at the Flagstaff School of Music are proud to announce our partnership to present monthly workshops from local musicians free of charge.
These workshops will start with our featured musicians performing and demonstrating different styles and techniques with discussion in between. Then we will break out into groups to offer participants some individual instruction in more of a lesson format, catered to different levels of understanding. Workshops are for “Young Jammers” of all ages. Children and families are encouraged to participate.
FFoTM has been incredible in bringing their Young Jammers into Bookman’s on the third Saturday of each month. We’ve now had two guitar workshops, and we look forward to the new and exciting ones to come in 2014.
In January, we host a fiddle workshop for all ages and skill levels. Three instructors of different fiddle backgrounds, Kristin Straka, Kari Barton and Steve Almquist, will perform, teach and chatt at 11 a.m. on January 18.
In February we’re excited to bring banjo experts into the mix, followed by a ukelele workshop in March. The workshops are free and open to the public, and while FFoTM will be providing some instruments, if you have your own you’re encouraged to bring it along.
It’s easy to get discouraged by a lack of accessible and affordable musical education programs, but FFoTM has you covered. Young Jammers doesn’t cost anything and with the instruments that they provide, anyone interested can learn a new instrument. Plato wrote, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” Who wouldn’t want that?
